It's the start
of apple and pear harvest time in Washington State orchards.
2002 marks the 80th run of the Ellensburg Rodeo. If you were in town on Saturday morning, Labor Day Weekend, it's likely that you staked out your curb or corner for the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade, recognized as the horsiest this side of the whatever; then hung around to see at least a few events scheduled during those three full days of rodeo action. (See more about Kittitas Valley Life.) Fair Time is not the time to talk about the Food Guide Pyramid...or is it? If you live in the Great Northwest, "dollars to doughnuts" there's a Fisher Scones booth at your county fair, and the line in front of it will stretch halfway to the Midway. You who are uninitiated in the wonders of Fisher Scones will walk away shaking your head, muttering, "They're just biscuits, for crying out loud," but the rest of us line-waiters believe differently. If there's no scone booth where you come from, try baking up a batch of FruitFromWashington's breakfast scones from our recipe online and serve them up with melted honey-whipped butter and homemade raspberry jam. You'll find these aren't just biscuits either! Oh, that thing we mentioned about the Food Guide Pyramid...Fair Time may be the best time to study up on good eating habits.

One hundred or fewer years ago everyone knew that "brand placement" was what happened to the backside of a calf, accompanied by the smell of burning hair and hide, and an awful lot of bawling. Now a days you notice "brand placement" in that movie you paid so much to see, where all the actors sip the same kind of pop or booze, munch a certain kind of snack, or light up from the same pack of smokes. It's all about identity and belonging, isn't it? Even today, a brand identifies what belongs to who and who belongs to what. So, who are you and what's your brand?
This FFW Manufacturing "B" grade redwood table was purchased by Ron's Frontier Tavern in Ellensburg. Ron then let anyone with a brand burn it, and also had a hot soldering iron available for initials and graffiti. We don't know all the brands on it but Doug Webster's "1i" brand does appear in several places as well as Pat Taylor's T with ^ over it and Martin Haberman's MH. (More about FFW Manufacturing of Ellensburg, Washington) It's no surprise that the University of Texas Law School is an excellent source of information about laws dealing with livestock and range land. Their legal experts summarily state, "The days of the unregulated open range are long gone in most of America. Instead, modern society has a complicated set of laws to regulate the interrelationship of livestock, people and property." Interested in finding out more about livestock laws and brand laws in your state? The University of Texas Law School website provides facts about brand laws and links to brand and livestock statutes. Also, if you have horses, you might enjoy reading their special feature, "Ask Lerlene". (I got a good laugh from it, but then again, I'm from Ellensburg. - ce) September is National Food Safety Education Month. So in the interest of spreading the word, FruitFromWashington will recite the 2002 Food Safety mantra, "Clean, Separate, Cook, Chill." Those are the Four Steps to Food Safety. As obvious as it sounds, don't neglect to wash your hands often and always handle and prepare food safely. To find out even more about Food Safety visit www.foodsafety.gov. If you do go to the fair this year and happen to tour the animal barns, be sure to wash your hands, and help your youngsters wash theirs, before eating. Sheep and goat exposition areas at the 2002 Lane County Fair are the suspected source of an E. coli outbreak which sickened more than 50 people in Eugene, Oregon, during August. Month
of September Feature Recipe This is really delicious. While visiting Cory this summer we used some of her rosee de juliette heirloom pears and locally grown blackberries to make this sorbet. We should have made more since after a 90+ degree August day we ate it all. ke 3/4 cup sugar Mix the sugar and water in sauce pan. Bring to boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, peel and core about 3 ripe pears and place in blender. Puree and pour into pan with sugar syrup after removing syrup from heat. Wash 1 cup ripe blackberries. Put in blender and blend on slowest speed for about 15 seconds. Mash through strainer to remove cores and seeds then mix strained blackberry puree with syrup-pear mixture. Pour into a jar and refrigerate until cold. Freeze according to ice cream maker directions. Makes about 1 quart.
