all to love;
Obey thy heart;
Friends, kindred, days,
Estate, good fame,
Plans, credit, and the Muse—
Nothing refuse.

To
quote from Great Moments in Apple History by Mitch Lynd, From
the beginning apples have been associated with love, beauty, luck,
health, comfort, pleasure, wisdom, temptation, sensuality, sexuality,
virility and fertility. Lynd's
timeline of human history takes us from 8,000 B.C. and the invention
of agriculture and beginnings of fruit cultivation along the Nile,
Tigris and Euphrates to the present day with University of California
scientists' discovery of powerful new anti-oxidants in apples.

Last
December the US Department of Agriculture halted the importation
of Spanish clementine oranges and instructed grocery stores to
destroy their inventory because of Medfly larvae findings.
The ban affected 17 states, including Washington. News service
reports explained that, "The Medfly is considered one of
the world's most destructive agricultural pests, threatening more
than 250 kinds of fruits, nuts and vegetables. Female flies lay
their eggs inside fruit, and the larvae then feed on it."
With global trade and travel, the world is a very small place
and, believe it or not, fruit pests have the potential of becoming
everybody's problem.
February
may seem like an unlikely time of year to bring up the responsibilities
of backyard fruit tree ownership...but the recent Medfly scare
reminded us that pest management is everybody's business. Here
is an excerpt from an article published in the Agrichemical
and Environmental News, February 2000, Issue No. 166, about
enforcing backyard pest control. It is titled "Ding-Dong,
It's Not Avon® Calling" by Sally O'Neal Coates.
Volunteer Kittitas County Pest Board Coordinator Urban Eberhart
may have explained it best when he likened fruit tree ownership
to pet ownership: "Nobody has trouble understanding what you do
if you own a pet--you take responsibility."
In
the eyes of the state, that goes for fruit tree ownership as well.
RCW 15.09 states that the owner of the fruit tree is responsible
for controlling destructive pests and diseases of that tree. Pest
boards become involved when a tree or trees is believed to pose
an economic threat to commercial fruit trees....The pest board
members with whom I spoke emphasized the cooperative nature of
the pest board concept. Not only do board members serve on a voluntary
basis, the entire pest management strategy they advocate is about
neighbors helping neighbors, volunteering to ensure that pests
are managed to a level that trade can proceed. With hard and soft
chemistries and organic methods, pest management is, in the words
of Karen Lewis, "not a black-and-white issue anymore." In fact,
as Urban Eberhart points out, "IPM can't work without this sort
of cooperation." (Read

If
you were watching one of the Seattle area television news stations
on the morning of Friday, January 18, you just may have heard
mention of FruitFromWashington.com! The
news anchors and a weather reporter were chatting about the health
effects of apples. One had heard that eating an apple made you
mentally sharper. They suggested that folks eat an apple that
morning then email them about how it made them feel. Of course
we immediately replied that in our opinion, "Apples do make
you sharper and are good for you as well." We
enclosed a link to what research studies show regarding the health
benefits of apple consumption. Our emailed message to them
was mentioned on air and we received the following reply from
AMS Meteorologist Walter Kelley of Q13 morning news: "Thanks
for all that info. I appreciate that you watch. Feel free to email
any unusual weather in your neighborhood."
