I
remember running daily, pre-sunrise, on the hills and ditchbanks
behind the house. The sagebrush trails were perfectly groomed
by cattle and deer, contoured naturally to give a rolling
feeling as I ran along, I felt the rhythms and smoothness
of 100,000 years of evolution. No concrete, no perfect circles
or straight lines. Just a game trail tucked into the folds
of the earth, carrying me along as the planet spun into a
sunrise and we drifted through space.
The
same trails created an otherworldliness in the winter. I would
choose one that was just above the fog line and run along
it looking out into a sea of cloud broken in the distant by
the jagged, snow covered peaks of the Stuarts. I felt like
I had achieved flight, running with no sense of earth. I felt
invincible to the cold, my body slowly heating up from within,
perfectly comfortable in the frozen land.
When feeling particularly ready, and powerful, I would run
up the side of the mountain, instead of along the road scratched
on the tail end. The side was not one to tackle lightly and
couldn't really be ran up. It was steeper than a roof with
a 12/12 pitch and required hands to scramble, grab and pull
yourself up with. My heart would hammer like a motor on the
redline, individual beats nearly indistinguishable. The false
summit would provide its usual tease until I got to know it
as a friend instead. At the top I added a rock to the pile
started years before by unknown people who shared the trail.
I did know that Bruce and his friends had added the rocks
to the cairn and that made me feel good. Like I was participating
in a rite earned by my own determination and guts. - Regan

Quotes
about Ellensburg Living
Jesse:
That's right, I'm English. I came here sixty years ago.
Bessy: I'm from Ellensburg. I'm a native.
- Richard Denner, "Home"
Ok
so it was the 1960's. I knew that moving from San Mateo, California
to a big old farm house west of Ellensburg meant I'd get a
horse. I was 11. - K.E.
We've
got beautiful weather here, upper 60's with blue skies. The
trees are coming out in blossom, flowers blooming, birds singing....A
woodpecker is breaking his nose on the black walnut tree.
Last Thursday one was working on a ladder all afternoon. He
didn't get very far. Mom wanted us to put away the ladder.
I said that if we did that then next year there would be five
more birds beating on our ladders. We let nature take its
course....Love, Regan P.S. No P.S. - R.E., April 15, 1983
I
thought the Badger Pocket Apple Blossom Festival was this
coming weekend. So I was surprised to hear we missed it....Are
apples still blooming? I lose all touch with reality down
here--there's no backyard clock like the crab apple tree or
Stepper shedding to inform what time it is....Love, Cory -

Bet
you were surprised when I answered the phone Saturday at home.
My description of the magnificent ride I had on Sham over
the phone didn't quite suffice. Gorgeous, but cold and windy--the
classic clouds over the mountains--spring day in Eburg. That
horse is one of the biggest little horses I've met. And so
classically Arabian. So excitable, yet gentle. He was careful
when Grandma petted him, yet he was coiled like a spring during
the ride. I was glad to be riding by myself so I could let
him walk without waiting, he was moving. We crossed both canals
below our house in the next gully over towards Diefenbachs.
Silly Sham slide in, then jumped straight up onto the bank--felt
like he had suction cups on his feet. - K.E., May 15,
1977
Urban
and Bruce went into Ellensburg and as they passed HUSKY truck
stop they saw a hitch hiker sweating in the 90° sun going
to Spokane. An hour later when they left town they saw the
same hitch hiker. They turned around and drove up to him illegally.
He came running up and they said, "we're not going to
Spokane (he looked down) but you sure look like you need a
beer" (he looked up and said yes with a smile). They
gave him a red, white, & blue Budweiser and an American
Flag. That should of helped him....Love, Regan - R.E.,

I
qualified to go to Iowa on the Washington State National Wrestling
Team. We leave the 24th of July and will be gone one week....I
told Westburg that if I qualified I probably wouldn't be able
to go, so the next day he said he'd work in the orchards and
fields if I went. He is starting work tomorrow....Bruce, some
of his friends, Urban and I are going to climb Mt. Stuart
the 22nd of August, that'll be a blast. Love, Regan -

The
longer I am gone from Ellensburg, the more I miss it. Actually
I miss you and the family and the farm the most. But I knew
this would happen.... - B.E., November 6, 1981
