The Kittitas Valley

For those of you who are not familiar with the area, the Kittitas Valley is situated about 100 miles southeast of Seattle and 30 miles west of the Columbia River along the eastern slopes of the Cascades and on the southern side of the Wenatchee Mountains. It is an ideal location for those who have dreamt of building a home on view acreage in a rural community. To risk lapsing into hyperbole, the Ellensburg area is a natural choice for those who are looking for a simpler, quieter existence within a rural, farming community.

Ellensburg is the county seat of Kittitas County. The view property which is for sale, is located approximately 20 minutes from town.

Major east-west freeway transportation for the Kittitas Valley is provided by Interstate-90, while Interstate-82 offers freeway access to the south. When we were kids, we rode our horses into the hills for a vantage point from which we could see I-82 as it was being built. The transportation distance from Kittitas Valley to the port cities of Seattle and Tacoma is less than 2 1/2 hours driving time. The sale property is located less than ten miles from direct freeway access to both interstate freeways.

Welcome to Ellensburg, Washington

Ellensburg, in central Washington, situated in the absolute center, heart of Washington state, offers a rural atmosphere and quieter pace than in the frantic cities. Ellensburg, Washington, is the home of Central Washington University, which contributes to the community culture and diversity of the area.

Ellensburg still has a downtown, as rare as that is in freeway bypassed small town America. A visionary urban planning group connected with the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce began working to preserve and enhance the downtown in the late 1960's. This small town managed to keep the malls and “big box” chain retail stores at bay—only recently Fred Meyers built a store down by the railroad tracks. Even it fits in, with a unique western motif facade.

Although it is sometimes easily dismissed as a “cow town,” Ellensburg (population 15,000) provides plenty of opportunities for folks to enjoy visual and other creative arts. Many concerts, plays and other performances are hosted at Central Washington University. Jazz in the Valley, and other concert and theater venues are well supported. You will find fine art in the galleries in Ellensburg. The Clymer Museum of Art is renowned. And of course Seattle is simply a two hour drive—close enough to attend opera or other performance events. The small town and rural environment is good for kids. There are opportunities for a wide range of activities for families and the public school system is first rate.

One of our claims to fame and history is the long running Kittitas County Fair & Ellensburg Rodeo held every year during Labor Day Weekend. From the start of the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade (recognized as the horsiest ever) to the final call at the rodeo ground's bucking chute, it's a weekend of non-stop action!

Other recreational amenities in the area include the Yakima River which is rated one of the best catch-and-release trout fishing streams in the Pacific Northwest. It flows past both Cle Elum and Ellensburg so there are many local access points.

Kittitas Valley —A Reminiscence

Photograph by Kathryn Eberhart

I remember running daily, pre-sunrise, on the hills and ditchbanks behind the house. The sagebrush trails were perfectly groomed by cattle and deer, contoured naturally to give a rolling feeling as I ran along, I felt the rhythms and smoothness of 100,000 years of evolution. No concrete, no perfect circles or straight lines. Just a game trail tucked into the folds of the earth, carrying me along as the planet spun into a sunrise and we drifted through space.

The same trails created an otherworldliness in the winter. I would choose one that was just above the fog line and run along it looking out into a sea of cloud broken in the distant by the jagged, snow covered peaks of the Stuarts. I felt like I had achieved flight, running with no sense of earth. I felt invincible to the cold, my body slowly heating up from within, perfectly comfortable in the frozen land.

When feeling particularly ready, and powerful, I would run up the side of the mountain, instead of along the road scratched on the tail end. The side was not one to tackle lightly and couldn't really be ran up. It was steeper than a roof with a 12/12 pitch and required hands to scramble, grab and pull yourself up with. My heart would hammer like a motor on the redline, individual beats nearly indistinguishable. The false summit would provide its usual tease until I got to know it as a friend instead. At the top I added a rock to the pile started years before by unknown people who shared the trail. I did know that Bruce and his friends had added the rocks to the cairn and that made me feel good. Like I was participating in a rite earned by my own determination and guts. - Regan Eberhart, May 14, 2002

Quotes about Ellensburg Living

Jesse: That's right, I'm English. I came here sixty years ago.
Bessy: I'm from Ellensburg. I'm a native.

- Richard Denner, "Home"

Ok so it was the 1960's. I knew that moving from San Mateo, California to a big old farm house west of Ellensburg meant I'd get a horse. I was 11. - K.E.

We've got beautiful weather here, upper 60's with blue skies. The trees are coming out in blossom, flowers blooming, birds singing....A woodpecker is breaking his nose on the black walnut tree. Last Thursday one was working on a ladder all afternoon. He didn't get very far. Mom wanted us to put away the ladder. I said that if we did that then next year there would be five more birds beating on our ladders. We let nature take its course....Love, Regan P.S. No P.S. - R.E., April 15, 1983

I thought the Badger Pocket Apple Blossom Festival was this coming weekend. So I was surprised to hear we missed it....Are apples still blooming? I lose all touch with reality down here--there's no backyard clock like the crab apple tree or Stepper shedding to inform what time it is....Love, Cory - C.E. May 13, 1981

Bet you were surprised when I answered the phone Saturday at home. My description of the magnificent ride I had on Sham over the phone didn't quite suffice. Gorgeous, but cold and windy--the classic clouds over the mountains--spring day in Eburg. That horse is one of the biggest little horses I've met. And so classically Arabian. So excitable, yet gentle. He was careful when Grandma petted him, yet he was coiled like a spring during the ride. I was glad to be riding by myself so I could let him walk without waiting, he was moving. We crossed both canals below our house in the next gully over towards Diefenbachs. Silly Sham slide in, then jumped straight up onto the bank--felt like he had suction cups on his feet. - K.E., May 15, 1977

Urban and Bruce went into Ellensburg and as they passed HUSKY truck stop they saw a hitch hiker sweating in the 90° sun going to Spokane. An hour later when they left town they saw the same hitch hiker. They turned around and drove up to him illegally. He came running up and they said, "we're not going to Spokane (he looked down) but you sure look like you need a beer" (he looked up and said yes with a smile). They gave him a red, white, & blue Budweiser and an American Flag. That should of helped him....Love, Regan - R.E., July 4, 1981

I qualified to go to Iowa on the Washington State National Wrestling Team. We leave the 24th of July and will be gone one week....I told Westburg that if I qualified I probably wouldn't be able to go, so the next day he said he'd work in the orchards and fields if I went. He is starting work tomorrow....Bruce, some of his friends, Urban and I are going to climb Mt. Stuart the 22nd of August, that'll be a blast. Love, Regan - R.E., July 5, 1981

The longer I am gone from Ellensburg, the more I miss it. Actually I miss you and the family and the farm the most. But I knew this would happen.... - B.E., November 6, 1981
