Fruit From Washington - Jack Zwiesler's Special Collection |
Welcome
to the Jack Zwiesler Special Collection of fabulous fruit crate labels!
Thanks to art and antique collector, Jack Zwiesler of Eugene, Oregon, we are able to expand our display of historic fruit crate labels from the Pacific Northwest, California and other fruit producing states. The labels shown here were collected by Jack Zwiesler over the course of many years. Jack's interest in collectible fruit crate labels grew out of a boyhood spent in Omak, Washington, where he picked up part-time work in local orchards. He has granted us use of these fine images for your enjoyment. Thank you, Jack! Just to the north of Omak, Washington, across the border in Canada, lies the productive agriculture area of Penticton and Okanagan. Penticton is especially famous for their peaches and celebrate with a Peach Festival in August each year. Here is a fruit crate label for Penoka brand apples of Vernon, British Columbia. The image is of a lofty king crowned apple above a lovely valley of orchards. As you probably guessed, Penoka is derived from the combined names of Penticton and Okanagan. For more information about Canadian Fruit Crate Labels from the Okanagan, visit this Canadian label site. |

Don't forget to click on each label for a larger, more detailed view! If you are new to label collecting, you will be delighted to discover a range of unique animal and bird motifs within the fruit crate label tradition. Here a mountain goat represents Great-Northwest Washington apples and a comical market going pig depicts Medford, Oregon pears. As you see, label images are often very literal in design. For example, a picture of a duck in front of a stone wall illustrates Duckwall brand Northwest apples! Enjoy these colorful animal and bird motifs from Jack Zwiesler's Collection of Fruit Crate Labels. This Northern Line Washington Apples crate label draws on the tall timber mystique of the Pacific Northwest. The lettering reminds us of classic Lincoln Logs and makes a wonderful frontier style detail! The specialties of Jack Zwiesler's collection are labels with images of the wild, wild west especially indians, cowboys, and other western scenes including rodeos, spurs and bucking horses. Here are labels for Pinnacle Brand Pears from Medford, Southern Oregon's Sun Sugared Pears, Rose Brand Pears of the Wenatchee Produce Company and Aurora Brand Apples from Dayton, Washington. Mountain peaks, northern lights and the perfect rose identify these labels. Par-Value, Blue Seal, Southern Choice are named on these apple crate labels. Sun Sugared Pears just have to be sweet. Legendary greats such as Uncle Sam and Santa Claus appear on these fruit crate labels. And then there's the hula girl from the Hawaiian islands on Seattle's Universal Fruit and Produce Company's label. |

Sportsman, a Chelan, Washington apple label in Jack's collection, shows the silhouette of a hunter posed with his rifle overlooking a wilderness paradise bathed in a sunset glow. The image is stereotypical of man in nature, suggesting the ruggedness of the sportsman's life in the natural wonderland of the northwest. |
We assume that the lake nestled between
the mountains shown on both the Sportsman label and on the Chelan
View Washington Apples label, is Washington State's fabulous, pristine
Lake Chelan, about which legends exist regarding its monstrous lake
trout.
The Chelan Mountains in the Wenatchee National Forest, east of Lake Chelan, and the Sawtooths that separate Chelan and Okanogan Counties to the west, are known for their large populations of wildlife including deer, elk and bear. Now the visitor to Lake Chelan is more likely to play golf or tennis at one of the recreational condominium resorts which have transformed this area from a sportsman's paradise into one for yuppies. Fishing, however, is still good. |
